What is a Sinus Infection?

A sinus infection occurs when the tissue lining of the sinuses become inflamed or infected. During a sinus infection, fluid fills and blocks nasal cavities allowing an infection to form. In most cases, patients have a viral sinus infection. However, bacterial sinus infections do occur.

Types of Sinus Infections

Our diagnosis process includes identifying the type of sinus infection. We tailor your treatment to your specific symptoms and cause.

There are two main types of sinus infections: acute sinusitis and chronic sinusitis.

Acute Sinusitis

With acute sinus infections, the symptoms usually last less than a month. A cold or virus frequently causes this short-term inflammation.

Chronic Sinusitis

Chronic sinus infections can last 12 weeks or longer. Also, recurring sinus infections link to chronic sinusitis. Bacterial infections and nasal polyps both contribute to long-term sinus infections.

When to Seek Care for a Sinus Infection

For a minor sinus infection, you likely won’t need care from a healthcare provider. Rest, pain medication, over-the-counter nasal saline sprays and hydration at home can treat the symptoms.

For a more severe sinus infection, seek professional medical care. If you experience symptoms for an extended amount of time, you may have a bacterial sinus infection that requires prescription medication. We also provide solutions to clean out the sinus cavity if you start to have trouble breathing.

What Are the Common Symptoms of a Sinus Infection?

Each patient’s experience with a sinus infection is unique. For many patients, symptoms of sinusitis may feel like the common cold or seasonal allergy symptoms. If you experience symptoms for longer than 10 days, seek medical attention.

  • Runny Nose

  • Sore Throat

  • Nasal Congestion

How Can I Treat a Sinus Infection?

To treat the symptoms of a sinus infection, stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and rest. Also, many patients find relief with saline nasal sprays, steam, added humidity, and flushing the nasal passage.

For bacterial infections, your physician may prescribe antibiotics. Also, decongestants and nasal corticosteroids aid in sinus infection treatment. If you experience pain or fever, over-the-counter pain relievers offer help.
